Fifteen years ago, the Coalition was the lead in advocating for the Commonwealth to create the Residential Assistance for Families in Transition Program (RAFT) which is now one of the only state funded homelessness prevention program.

Annually, RAFT provides thousands of families, individuals, and unaccompanied youth with financial assistance to retain or obtain housing. Today, during the pandemic RAFT has become a lifeline for hundreds of thousands of households who have fallen behind on rent and utility payments.

This past fall A Bed for Every Child headed to Salisbury to deliver to two sisters their beds.

A Bed for Every Child’s truck pulled into the girl’s driveway, and Tuck could see two identical young girls in the front window. Tuck wondered how anyone could tell Olivia and Natalie apart.

The beds were unloaded along with the bedding, which one was yellow and the other pink, and they had moon themes.

Olivia and Natalie are over the moon tonight as they sleep in their own bed.

A toddler moving into a “Big Kid Bed” is a childhood milestone. Yet that milestone cannot be met by far too many toddlers growing up in a low-income household simply because their parents cannot afford the purchase of a bed.

Aside from the multitude of benefits healthy sleep has on a child’s health and development, having an actual bed serves three critical functions: comfort, stability, and normalcy.

To ensure that a toddler growing up in poverty can have a bed of their own the Coalition launch The Big Kid Bed Initiative in partnership with Pediatric Departments at Community Health Centers to identify children who would benefit.

Staying well is what we always hope for, but now during the COVID-19 pandemic, it has taken on a greater meaning.

To ensure people can remain healthy, it requires having a place to call home.  Far too many people have lost their jobs leaving those, living paycheck to paycheck, to face very uncertain times.

The Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless has been helping low-income households navigate resources to remain stably housed for over 15 years partnering with community health centers.

Now, during the COVID-19 pandemic, our work has taken on a greater urgency.  The Coalition’s Casa Project helps patients quickly navigate access to food and housing assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Two years ago, A Bed for Every Child created the STEAM to Build DREAMS Project allowing us to partner with local schools to engage their students in designing and building the bed frames for delivery.

The STEAM to Build DREAMS Project offers an interdisciplinary learning experience that uses creativity and logic along with soft skills and technical skills.

The project incorporates design, math, critical thinking, and visual creativity that results in the students building a twin bed frame.

The project also moves students beyond a coat or mitten drive and instead provides a hands-on opportunity to give a child a new bed that will allow them to have a place to get a good night’s sleep for years to come.

A Bed for Every Child was launched 7 years ago when a teacher asked for help to get beds for her students who were growing up in poverty.  Its goal is simple but impactful delivering beds to children in need of one of their own.

Today, A Bed for Every Child delivers thousands of twin bed set, including a new mattress, and bed frame, free of cost, to every child that needs one.

Everyone knows a bedtime story begins with a bed.  Along with the importance of a good night’s sleep, A Bed for Every Child knows that children exposure to reading at an early age can help them in school.

A Bed for Every Child launched “A Bedtime Story Begins with a Bed” where with every delivery of a new bed, children receive new age appropriate books.

The Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless has long believed that helping a student growing up in poverty to receive an education can help them to succeed as an adult.

Offering them the opportunity to participate in financial education can also help them make major financial decisions throughout their life.

The Coalition in partnership with Credit Unions have launched financial literacy workshops via zoom.

Through a series of Zoom trainings that will focus on financial decision making - gaining a perspective on how their lifestyle and financial choices will impact their futures.

Each session walks students through the arc of life’s typical areas such as like how to afford college, budgeting and credit/debts
