The Paradox of Poverty
in Paradise
Many people have asked us about combining participation in the
SOFTLY International service project "A Bed For Every Child" and
visiting the special sites in the countries where we serve the
children. We reach out to the poorest children and their families in
Central and South America.
Our Vision is "Each child in the Global
family throughout the world can have their own bed to improve health
and provide security and quality rest which promotes education,
hopes and dreams."

Costa Rica
North Americans and Europeans have flocked to Costa Rica for years.
This tiny country, about the size of West Virginia in the United
States operates without a military. Among the breathtaking sites of
the rainforest and jungles you will also find thousands of children
living in the most severe poverty in Central America. If a family
has a bed in their shelter usually 4-8 adults and children are
sleeping on it. During the rainy season to avoid sleeping on their
dirt floors that have turned into mud, 10 people may share a bed.

Honduras
On Roatan Island, a tropical paradise located two hours off the
coast of Miami, you will find a striking natural beauty highlighted
by its incredible barrier reef, Caribbean ambience and diverse
wildlife. Hondurans cater to American tourism, and yet it is the
second poorest country in the Americans. While cruise ships and
other tourists find the Island of Roatan to be one of the most
beautiful places in the world, it is very difficult to overlook the
street children begging for their next meal. You will have the
opportunity to "Give Back" by helping them and their families by
participating during your stay in SOFTLY's "A Bed for Every Child"
program each day.
Your stay also includes an optional Swim with the Dolphins!
Optional post-tour excursion to Copan Mayan Ruins, featuring some of
the most sacred and ancient history of the Mayan culture.
Note: The cost for this trip is tax-deductible. |
Nicaragua
Nicaragua is a forgotten jewel in Central America. The beautiful
beaches, lakes, forests and jungle areas surround this small
country. During and following the conflicts between the Sandinistas
and the Contras, Nicaragua was known as a country of fear and
danger. These issues have been resolved and peace prevails; however
the aftermath has left much of the country in severe poverty.
Children are sleeping on dirt floors that turn into mud when it
rains, their shelters are located near dumps and there is inadequate
food for the children. Therefore, the children are unable to attend
school. |
Peru
Peru attracts tourists from all over the world because of the
ancient ruins such as Machu Picchu, a UNESCO World Heritage site, as
well as other parts of the cultural heritage dating back to the Inca
Empire.
The Incas believed this is where "life" began. Life here is hard for
disadvantaged children. High in the Andes, above the tree line, hey
live with inadequate food and shelter. When tourists
visit serene Lake Titicaca you will experience the physical beauty
but also children living in extreme poverty. The children are often
barefoot and living on the dirt floor of their shelters.
SOFTLY's "A
Bed for Every Child" program is helping these children by delivering
bedding. This includes a pillow, which of course, needs a pillow
case. The Magic Dream Pillow project is art project that you can
participate in to help teach the children the value of dreaming: how
important is to have dreams, to wish for things, to have goals in
our life.....and how visualizing your dreams in this way and keeping
them near you while you sleep helps your dreams come true. Using
fabric paints and markers, the children can create designs and
affirmations, as well as put their names on their pillowcases.
Sayings such as Sweet Dreams, Dreams Come True, etc. – all in
Spanish, of course! Each child leaves with their Dream Pillow and an
experience that affects them very positively for years to come. |
